The joy of losing

As kids, our lives used to be so uncomplicated. All we did was eat, sleep, finish our homework and play, and yet there was something which kept us fit.

Those extra flabs, which refuse to leave us now, had somehow ignored us throughout our childhood. Fitness trainer Pawan Patodia answers, “Most of us have grown up playing for hours, swimming and running. Before we even knew, we had finished with our workouts. But today, childhood running has gone, and a workout has become a task. The best solution is going for activities, which kept you in shape as a kid. Swim, jump on the trampoline or just grab a colourful hula hoop and get it swinging around. These are very effective and fun ways of loosing those extra flabs.”

After a long, stressful day, nothing works better for getting your heart rate up, than playing dodgeball or cycling. Fitness trainer, Nitin Gaikwad agrees, “If you don’t feel like visiting the gym, make sure you get your regular doses of running, skipping and sports. Cycling is one of those activities, which if done in a group, can be both fun and useful to shed off the kilos. But the best activity is to go trekking as it not only helps keeping your paunch in, but also gives you time with friends.” Changing the workout regime for consecutive days helps in beating boredom.

Fitness professional Ranjit Kotwal adds, “Go for a full body training on day one, kickboxing on the next day and hill climbing on the third day. If you want to work out with your partner, then aqua aerobics or aqua pilates are great options. Zumba dance is the latest activity that is doing rounds in the fitness circuit. When at home, I would say just put on the I-pod, wear your headphones and take your dog for a run. Even before you realise you will have burnt some calories.”

Manoj Dhawade, fitness trainer, feels that workouts on the floor with a Swiss ball and medicine ball also helps keep up the fun. He adds, “Group activities are more fun than sweating it out alone because you get to meet more people and socialise too. Incognito rope climbing classes also help in keeping the fun alive.” After spending half of the day at work, when we manage to squeeze in an hour to exercise, the treadmill can start looking scary. When this happens, try to recreate the magic of childhood. Run, jog, jump, hula-hoop and skip. Soon you’ll realise losing weight can be so much fun!

Thyroid - Hypothyroid - Meaning - Causes - Symptoms - Treatment

What is Hypothyroid? Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. Since the main purpose of thyroid hormone is to "run the body's metabolism," it is understandable that people with this condition will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism. Causes About three percent of the general population is hypothyroidic. Factors such as iodine deficiency or exposure to Iodine can increase that risk. There are a number of causes for hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide. In iodine-replete individuals hypothyroidism is generally caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, or otherwise as a result of either an absent thyroid gland or a deficiency in stimulating hormones from the hypothalamus or pituitary.

What signs and symptoms can occur if thyroid function is affected?

Thyroid gland: A gland that makes and stores hormones that help regulate the heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and the rate at which food is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are essential for the function of every cell in the body. They help regulate growth and the rate of chemical reactions (metabolism) in the body. Thyroid hormones also help children grow and develop. The thyroid gland is located in the lower part of the neck, below the Adam's apple, wrapped around the trachea (windpipe). It has the shape of a butterfly: two wings (lobes) attached to one another by a middle part. The thyroid uses iodine, a mineral found in some foods and in iodized salt, to make its hormones. The two most important thyroid hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), which is produced by the pituitary gland, acts to stimulate hormone production by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland also makes the hormone calcitonin, which is
