Healthtips-Endometriosis: Symptoms and Treatment

Endometriosis occurs when the tissue that makes up the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrium, begin to grow outside the uterus in areas such as the fallopian tubes, ovaries, the outer layer of the uterus or the lining of the pelvis. The ovaries release eggs and produce the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones help prepare the uterus for the implantation of a fertilized egg. At the beginning of the menstrual cycle, hormone levels increase; that signals the uterus to thicken it̢۪s inner lining and, making it easier for a fertilized egg to adhere to the inside of the womb. If pregnancy does not occur hormone levels drop and the thickened lining is shed from body during menstrual bleeding. Antibiotics mess up your stomach,

E ven seemingly gentle antibiotics may severely disrupt the balance of microbes living in the gut, with unforeseen health consequences, U.S. researchers reported on Monday. An intimate study of three women given ciprofloxacin showed the drug suppressed entire populations of beneficial bacteria, and at least one woman took months to recover. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, supports the common wisdom that antibiotics can damage the "good" germs living in the body. It may also support the idea behind the development of so-called probiotic products including yogurt with live cultures of bacteria. The researchers tested the three volunteers daily, giving them a five-day course of the commonly used antibiotic ciprofloxacin twice during the 10-month study. They ran DNA tests on stool samples from the volunteers to determine what kind of microbes were living in the gut. "The effect of ciprofloxac in on the gut microbiota was prof

Eight cancer signs identifie

Researchers have highlighted the eight unexplained symptoms that are most closely linked to cancer. The Keele University team also points to the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia. The other symptoms are: rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal prostate tests, reports the BBC. Cancer Research UK said unusual changes in a person's health should be checked. The figure for each symptom was calculated by combining the results of 25 previous studies. They found that, if the patient was below the age of 55, there were only two signs, which reached the 'one-in-20' threshold. These were a rectal prostate examination, which gave abnormal results, and a breast lump. After 55, but only in men, there was evidence that difficulty swallowing could be a sign of oesophageal cancer, while blood in the urine was highlighted as a particular conce
